MARCILE B. (SURFUS) GARDINER, age 90, formerly of Hudson, Michigan, made her journey Home on Saturday, June 9, 2012, from Betz Nursing Home in Auburn, Indiana. She was born on December 15, 1921, in Cedarville, Indiana, and lived her early life in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She graduated from Fort Wayne's Northside High School in 1940. In 1943, she married James K. Gardiner in Fort Wayne. In 1946 and following WWII, she and Jim moved to Hudson, Michigan, where they owned and operated Gardiner's Store, later known as Gardiner's Decorating Center, until 2001. Marcile worshiped our Lord Jesus at Wheatland Congregational Church in Pittsford, Michigan. She was a member of the Devils Lake Yacht Club and the Hudson Friday Club. Marcile had many natural talents and gifts and was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She will be remembered for the way she would make you feel important and loved. Surviving are her son David (Terri) Gardiner of Clear Lake, Indiana; daughter, Janice (Geoffrey) McCord of Garrett, Indiana; three grandchildren, Channing (Sarah) Gardiner of Aurora, Illinois; Geoffrey (Beth) McCord of Garrett, Indiana; and, Sgt. James (Nicole) McCord serving in the U.S. Army in Weisbaden, Germany. She is also survived by seven (soon to be eight) great-grandchildren, as well as nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by husband James Gardiner, sister Kathryn (Surfus) Warner, and grandson Jonathan McCord. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, June 14, 2012, at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson, with Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Burial will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery in Hudson. The visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM on Wednesday. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association.
